This training is offered to investigators and to professionals working for the Director of Youth Protection (DYP).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the NICHD Guide?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development) Protocol is a non-suggestive investigative interview guide developed in the United States by Michael Lamb and his colleagues. It was translated in French and adapted for Qu\u00e9bec by researcher Mireille Cyr, a co-chairholder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/marie-vincent.org\/en\/fondation\/research\/\">Marie-Vincent Interuniversity Research Chair in Child Sexual Abuse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Non-suggestive interviews are conducted within investigative interviews with children who are suspected victims of sexual violence. They are also used when meeting with a child who is a victim of physical violence or a witness to a crime.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Non-suggestive interview: tangible impacts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A non-suggestive interview lessens the suggestibility of interviewers, i.e. their capacity to influence and skew the testimony of the child, by adapting their questions to the children\u2019s capability so as to help them provide a more detailed account.<\/li>\n<li>Using the protocol helps the investigators and professionals leading the interview to ask more open-ended questions so as to get as many details from the children as possible.<\/li>\n<li>The non-suggestive interview calls on the child\u2019s free recall memory, which results in longer answers that are more informative and more likely to be accurate and truthful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The goal of this training is to learn about suggestibility, children\u2019s memory and their developmental capacities, the interviewer\u2019s communication skills, the theory and structure of the NICHD interview guide as well as the impact its use has when conducting investigative interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, the guide allows to gather a set of details about the event in a non-suggestive manner which will ultimately assist the ensuing judicial process. It is actually required in multisectoral agreements and requested for hearings involving a minor.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, suggestive questions are likely to indicate to the child the desired response or even cast doubt on their answer, for instance. As such, it would be preferable to avoid any questions such as: \u201cDo you think that he wanted to hurt you?\u201d and \u201cHe probably told you that it was normal?\u201d.
